Kids Ski Helmet Review
Giro Crue Mips Youth Snow Helmet
Pros: Protective, fun colours, comfortable
Cons: It May a bit heavy for kids. The vents on the top are not closeable.
Experience: My friend got this helmet because it was one of the cheapest options available that still had MIPS technology in it. After her toddler (her name is Taylah) used the helmet serval times, it turned out good quality and very protective.
Once Taylah lost her balance and tumbled over. She hit the back of her head but no tearing. The only person freaking out and crying is her mom (my friend). Then, she took Taylah to the hospital immediately. Taylah was fine, and she didn’t get hurt. Taylah wasn’t crying, which means she didn’t feel pain either.
After that, my friend recommended this helmet to our other friend who got a teen boy—Yudai. Yudai was crazy about the fun and cool colours, and he even invited his friends to buy the same helmet in different colours. Yudai and his friends didn’t wear beanies underneath because their heads were toasty warm the entire day on the slopes. And size fit them comfortably.
The base of the helmet has up to 6 cm adjustment. Also, there is a stretchable soft strap at the back of the frame, which helps to secure the helmet. It will be better if the top vent holes are closeable.
Giro Launch Mips Youth Snow Helmet
Pros: Lightweight, protective, fun colour, warm, breathable
Cons: Some people said the earpads don’t stay in, but my friend doesn’t get this problem.
Same as the Giro Crue MIPS Helmet, the helmet has up to 6 cm adjustment to fit kids comfortably. My friend bought it for her toddler daughter. Because she was going to her first snowboarding class, and she loved it so much. Easy to fit and adjust and comfortable.
Giro Launch Mips have more bright, fun colours than Giro Crue. My friend took little time to struggle with the colours. However, these fun colours kids will love it. Some people said the earpads don’t stay in, but my friend doesn’t get this problem. Not sure is the quality control problem or other reason.
POC POCito Skull
Pros: Protective, safe, warm, removable LED light, design for oval-shaped heads, comfortable
Cons: Pricey, not MIPS and a bit heavy.
Experience: My friend’s husband bought this helmet for Taylah. He thought it should protect Taylah’s head well because it has full sides covers rather than just soft earpads, which offers more protection. When the ski season is coming, Niseko is always packed with people, and they can easily find Taylah by the bright colour helmet. Plus, the helmet has a name tag for parents’ contact info. If missing Taylah, the Security guard or other people who saw Taylah alone can quickly contact them.
They skied in the nighttime and found out one more benefit from this helmet is LED light, and it gave Taylah better visibility are nice.
And I ask them if they need to repurchase it soon cause Taylah grows fast at this age. They told me this helmet has great fit adjustability, which gave them a few more years.
Smith Prospect Jr MIPS Kids
Pros: Protective, safe, warm, comfortable, stylish
Cons: Bad quality control, bit heavy for toddlers
Experience: This helmet has a lot of features that you’d find in an adult helmet. And it’s been specifically designed for kids.
My friend got this for his little boy. Easy to put on and adjust and comfortable to wear. It fitted well. Excellent head protection. His little one lost control and rolled over from a small hill while skied. The little boy didn’t get hurt at all.
The downside is the weight and inadequate quality control. A friend of his got a horrible one, broken adjustment part. Although he hasn’t got the problem, it’s nice to know beforehand.
Salomon Grom Helmet Kids
Pros: Visor is easy to flip up and down, cheap, lightweight, good ventilation
Cons: Google easy to get damage
Experience: True to size. My friend bought them together with Salomon goggles for her five-year-old daughter, who wear glasses. She found it’s comfortable and looked so pretty. Moreover, it’s easy for her kid to get visor up or down without any issues. So that she can’t lose the goggles because the goggle strap holder snaps closed.
The only downside, it that you need to be careful not to scratch Google. Otherwise, it will take a lot of time to find a google fit for this helmet. For this price, my friend rebought a new one instead of buying new google, which not sure if it’s fit.
