Mount Esan is an active volcano located a little out of Hakodate. It rises to 618 meters above sea level. It’s good to hike on Mt. Esan when the weather is good. From late May to early June, the azalea flowers bloom. It turns Mt. Esan into a rose pink color. During the Azalea blooms season, many local people will go hiking. Also, there is an Esan Azalea Festival in Azalea Park on Sunday of late May. Many shops are open to selling specialties.
The Mt. Esan Azalea blooms Festival is a good spot to walk around with kids. And, if you are the type of family who loves to go hike, and the kids already above primary school, I would like to recommend you go hiking at Mt. Esan in the azalea season.
