Hakodate Goryokaku Festival – Hokkaido Samurai Parade

Goryokaku Festival is also known as Goryokaku Sai. It’s a massive festival where over 1000 people dressed up in combat uniforms during the civil war. It was the last battle of civil war between samurai and the new government in 1869. After the war, the new government brings Japan to a new era. To commemorate people who died in the battle, the Japanese have organized this festival and parade since 1970 every year. You can see people costume the most famous samurai who died in the war – Hijikata Toshizo.

How To Get Here

From Hakodate-Ekimae tram get on either a Route 2 or Route 5 tram going toward Yunokawa or Yunokawa-onsen. And, get off at “Goryokaku Koen Mae” and walk for about 15 minutes.
