“Kelp, hot springs and Jomon hometown” in the northern part of Hakodate city, Minamikayabe area. It’s about 30 km far from Hakodate train station. Every June, the festival is held to pray for a good harvest. “Hirome” is kelp that is a specialty of this area.
The highlight is the boating competition. (南茅部 ひろめ舟祭り) They use the wooden boat, which is used for natural kelp to the boating competition. People on the boat heroically drumming and shouts. It makes the festival powerful.
Also, people decorated big fishing flags on the boat that looked gorgeous. It’s popular when the parade of fishing boats cruising near the port. Especially at night, the lights from the boats are fantastic, and the fireworks are a sign of the end of the event. During the festival, you can buy some special local products, the famous one is the Hirome kelps(Hirome kombu).
