The Mount Hakodate observatory is one of the popular best night views in Japan. From Mount Hakodate observatory, you can see Hakodate city, bays, and the light from Goryokaku Tower. The panorama of the city skyline is beautiful even before sunset. So, if you want to go to Mt. Hakodate observatory deck by 3 minutes ropeway. There is some information to help you get to the Hakodate ropeway at the Mountain Base Station (Sanroku Station).
Mountain Base Station (Sanroku Station)
Mountain Base Station is connected via Hakodate ropeway up to Mount Hakodate observatory. There are 4 common ways to Mountain Base Station.
Hakodate City Tram
From Hakodate-Ekimae tram get on either a Route 2 or Route 5 tram going toward Yachigashira or Hakodate-Dokkumae. And, get off at Jujigai and walk uphill about 7 minutes to the Mountain Base Station.
Rental Car Or Taxi
It takes around 7 minutes from Hakodate train station to Mountain Base Station. There is a free parking area for people who come by car.
Recommend taxi service to a group of 3-4. It’s convenient but expensive.
Bus
Take No.2 bus to the Ropeway-mae. You will see the Mountain Base Station in front of you when you get off the bus. Therefore, I put an English version of the Bus system website below. You can check the timetable and bus route.

Walk
It’s 2 kilometers from Hakodate train station to the Mountain Base Station. You can walk on the main street crossing the Jujigai crossing, follow the Nambu Zaka Slope up to the hill, and you will see Mountain Base Station on your left side. It takes you around 25 minutes.
Hakodate Ropeway Information
Mount Hakodate ropeway is the most popular way to get to the mountaintop. It takes 3 minutes from the Mountain Base Station(Sanroku station) to the Mt. Hakodate mountaintop. In October the Hakodate ropeway is closed for about 10 days for maintenance, other than that it’s open through all year.
