Miharashi Park (Kosetsuen, 見晴公園) is the only nationally designated cultural property garden in Hokkaido.
It was a villa of a wealthy merchant in the Meiji era. There is the unique old architecture built in the Meiji and Taisho eras and the Sukiya-style Shoin-zukuri garden pavilion.
Suki means refined, Shoin-zukuri is a style of Japanese residential architecture used in the mansions of the military, temple guest halls, and quarters of Zen abbot during the Azuchi–Momoyama period (1568–1600) through the Edo periods (1600–1868). It forms the basis of today’s traditional-style Japanese house. And now familiar to locals as a park in Hakodate.
Approximately 150 types of trees are planted on the vast site and maintained walking paths. So that you can enjoy the Japanese-style garden.
Also, it’s a famous place for autumn leaves. Many photographers come and take shoots during the autumn season. There is a festival called Hakodate MOMI-G Festa (Autumn Leaves Festival). The garden is lit up which creates a dreamy atmosphere during the festival.
