Hachimanzaka Slope is located in the Motomachi-Cho region. The region nestles at the foot of Mount Hakodate, numerous slope roads lead to the city and its port. Each slope has its characteristic view and shops. The most famous slope is Hachimanzaka. Hachiman Zaka was selected for the No.1 of “Slope in Japan you would want to visit for sightseeing”. Therefore, you can see the panorama of Hakodate city and Mount Hakodate when you go up to the hill.
About Motomachi
This area is known to have significant ties to the westernization of the City. Christian missionaries brought not only the gospel preaching of Christianity but also the exposure and exchange of Eastern-Western culture and knowledge with them. Westerners also brought the skills of shipbuilding and trades. After Japan opened it up to the western world, Hakodate became one of the important ports for the domestic long-distance and international trade exchanges and led to the developments of the City’s seafaring infrastructure and trading. Around Motomachi, there are Catholic Church and Russian Orthodox Church that co-existing with the Japanese temple structure. The picturesque landscape and serene atmosphere around the neighborhood give visitors an ideal place for leisure strolling.

How TO Get Here
The tram or No.3 bus stop at all the popular spots nearby. So, it is much easier for travel families. When you stop at “Jujigai” or “Motomachi”, you have to walk uphill to the top. Recommend you wear comfortable footwear to go.
If you want to start from the top of the Hachiman-Zaka Slope, you need to pay attention while you are on the bus in case you don’t miss the bus stop.

From the “Hakodate Sta.-Mae” bus stop gets on the No.3 bus to the “Motomachi” bus stop.
- Walk from the middle of Hachiman-Zaka Slope
From the “Hakodate Sta.-Mae” bus stop get on the No.3 bus Destinations Hakodate Sta.-Mae→the “Kyu Igirisu Ryojikan” bus stop or “Chuka Kaikan-Mae” bus stop→walk for about 2 minutes to Hachiman-Zaka slope.
- Walk from the top of Hachiman-Zaka Slope to the foot of the hill
From the “Hakodate Sta.-Mae” bus stop, get on the bus……
- No.60 Destinations Nishi High School→the “Nishi Koko-Mae” bus stop.
- No.36A Destinations Nishi High School→the “Nishi Koko-Mae” bus stop
- No.43C Destinations Nishi Koko-Mae→the “Nishi Koko-Mae” bus stop

From Hakodate-Ekimae tram get on either a Route 2 or Route 5 tram going toward Yachigashira or Hakodate-Dokkumae. And, get off at “Jujigai” and walk for about 6 minutes.
